I recently spoke to Richard Tyler at The Times about my experience transitioning from PhD physics to entrepreneurship, and what I've learnt training other scientists to lead their own successful spinout companies.
The skills required to be a good researcher are much the same as those required to be an excellent founder.
Despite common misconceptions that scientists can't make good entrepreneurs, that has been my consistent experience.
From launching Spin Up Science in 2018 to support the development of scientists as leaders and innovators, to co-founding Empirical Ventures alongside Johnathan Matlock, it's clear we need greater support for PhDs to take their ideas beyond research journals and into the real world.
Across the UK, the number of university spinouts is accelerating, proving the momentum behind this mission, and I'm honoured to be part of it.
