On the ground at CATL's Munich launch

CATL's TENER Sodium is the first real-world validated sodium-ion storage system. Why sodium answers the two constraints that have always held lithium back at grid scale.

I was in Munich (again) yesterday with CATL, to attend the launch of the world's first real-world validated sodium-ion energy storage approach, TENER Sodium.

Lithium-ion has always struggled to be a viable grid-scale energy storage approach because of its scarcity and price point.

Sodium-ion solves both of these constraints, while enabling use from -20°C to +45°C.

Which increasingly is just a normal summer in the UK.

Now they're charging ahead, with first deliveries landing in China this September, a target of 1 GWh shipped by the end of 2026, and global rollout beginning next June.
